A series in five parts

The Weave & the Window

Reality is one weave of connection, and a finite mind is the whole parsed into a single point of view.

One picture, built from physics and the phenomenology of profound experience: beneath space and time lies a single, undivided connection. Consciousness is what that connection is like from the inside, and a self is the whole drawing a boundary around one small region and looking out. The essay states it, and the companions test it. One separates the physics from the philosophy and builds the model, one offers a prediction that could be shown wrong, one weighs the picture against near-death testimony, and a last places it among earlier thinkers. Two claims run through the series, and the lighter one stands on its own: a testable hypothesis about a narrow window in the brain, and — held separately — a metaphysics about what that window might disclose. The window can hold without the weave.

One whole, parsed into many finite minds

The undivided whole (left) parsed into finite minds (right). In the warm cluster, one mind’s boundary is thinning, its threads reaching back into the whole.

“Mind is by its very nature a singulare tantum. I should say: the over-all number of minds is just one.”

— Erwin Schrödinger, Mind and Matter (1958), “The Arithmetical Paradox: The Oneness of Mind”

How this was madeThis series is the product of a long collaboration with AI models. The argument, the physics, the formal model, and the experiment that could falsify it were all generated by guiding a model through draft after draft — and the author’s contribution is not the ideas but the steering: the questions pressed, the weak links flagged, the standard each pass is held to, and the judgement of when it is right. It is offered in that spirit, partly as the case itself and partly as a demonstration of what these models can produce in this register when a person keeps nudging. As the models sharpen, the series will be rewritten against them. The technical claims here have not been independently checked, and should be read as what the model constructs, not as settled results.

Appendices

Begin with the essay. The companions deepen it. Or, for the falsifying test, go straight to The Window, or to The Return for the near-death testimony. The Company It Keeps sets the picture beside earlier thinkers, and the data appendix examines the corpus behind these tests.
